Making MEGA in South Africa: The Biggest Fashion Issue Launched

The audience gave a hearty laugh watching a beaming Maja Salvador on the big screen running towards a group of giraffe at a distance. She was like an excited little girl once again who paused for a moment to catch her breath while exclaiming “ Ang Giraffe giraaffe!!” to the amusement of many. What she actually meant by her remark was “ang hirap, hirap”(translated as “so tough”) pertaining to that very rare moment of running through tall grasses trying to get a closer look at the majestic creatures roaming the South African safari. Yes, it was in that other side of the globe, in a faraway continent where she and three other beautiful young actresses had their remarkably fun and fashion filled experience of a lifetime. Holding hands in that same wilderness with Maja are Erich Gonzales, Kathryn Bernardo, and Julia Barretto who are undoubtedly today’s loveliest, hottest, and brightest stars of the Philippine showbiz industry who flew for almost 12,000 kilometers to be the cover stars of MEGA Magazine‘s biggest issue to date.

Topping its issue with Anne Curtis in South America last September 2013, MEGA Magazine once again made headlines as it launched which is by far The BIGGEST issue in Philippine fashion glossy history this September 2014. The so called Big 4 young stars Maja, Erich, Kathryn and Julia‘s star wattage power and beauty definitely made heads turn towards the book stands for one of the most iconic covers ever. And last September 4 I had the privilege to witness Making MEGA in South Africa – an unveiling of that much awaited issue with a film documentary at the Meralco Theater. We all watched in delight seeing how the 4 actresses could together cheerfully laugh and make comical antics in between shoots despite their status and professional competition in the world of show business. In that faraway place where showbiz rivalry was nothing but a word, where everything is raw and basic, away from gossips and devoid of the rigorous and fast paced city life..they all are just friendly girls who loves to bond and share lighthearted moments.

A MEGA Moment.

And so to the audience awe and fascination, amidst the vast wilderness of South Africa, the stars, models and MEGA‘s crew weaved all their magic for the Big Fashion Issue by creating attractive and captivating beauty editorials as well as celebrating the tribal allure, the bold colors and wildlife of that exotic continent. And against all odds and the elements from cold gusts of the wind, the glaring sun, the neutral landscape of naturally sculpted rocks, the dusty golden sand, wild bushes and of course time, MEGA‘s unparalleled team comprised of master photographer Mark Nicdao, stylist Patrick Galang, hair expert Jing Monis, make up artist Robbie Pinera, and creative director Suki Salvador, still produced exceptional photos all seen on the video in which we all gave a thunderous applause.

Everyone including myself could only catch our breath and be amazed at the shots. With a documentary like it, I told myself THIS definitely is MEGA’S Biggest Fashion Issue! And at the epilogue of the film while we still delight ourselves with all the photos and how MEGA made it happen, was a surprising and touching revelation. After 11 fruitful years of establishing MEGA as the best Philippine fashion magazine to beat, Sari Yap (CEO and President of One Mega Group) stepped down as Editor in Chief and passed the reins to another empowered woman and lady of substance. Sari described her as humble, willing to learn, with passion, wants the work done and the perfect person to have such power. And so, to her suprise of having been chosen, Peewee Reyes- Isidro while trying to fight her tears of joy.. accepted the powerful position as the new EIC of MEGA Magazine.
And just like any successful celebration, after that awesome film viewing moment, and still clad in our Safari Chic attires, we headed to MEGA‘s Fashion Party at the VU Sky Bar in Marco Polo Hotel Ortigas to end the night with one MEGA BIG fun!
